Serious capability in a full-size pickup. introductionthe toyota tundra is a serious full-size pickup, whether measured by dimensions, hauling capacity or towing capacity. Since this iteration was introduced as a 2007 model it's been refined, and for 2011, tundra's base v6 engine gets an overhaul. Also, all 2011 toyota tundra models come standard with trailer sway control. The 2011 tundra lineup has been simplified, as well.  we've found the tundra to be a stable, comfortable truck for towing a 20-foot enclosed car trailer over long distances. Seating is available for three, five or six. Three bed lengths and three wheelbases are available.  trim levels range from basic tundra grade to luxurious limited models with leather upholstery, and from the lowest end to the highest is a price differential of around 2:1. High-end models are available with gps navigation and a rearview camera, or a rear-seat entertainment system with a 9-inch lcd screen. An available deck rail system in the bed anchors moveable tie-down cleats rated at 220 pounds each.  the new 4. 0-liter v6 engine for 2011 nets 270 horsepower, 278 pound-feet of torque and epa ratings of 16/20 mpg city/highway (representing increases of 34, 12, and 1/1 respectively over 2010). The v6 is available only with two-wheel-drive versions of the regular or double cab; the v6 weighs at least 300 pounds less than the v8s for better mileage and longer component life. It can't tow as much as the v8s but its 1620-pound payload is more than many tundra v8s can carry. The v6 comes with a 5-speed automatic. The tundra grade equipment basically matches the regular cab, adding carpet in place of the vinyl flooring, a tachometer and outside temperature indicator. Standard equipment includes heated, leather-trimmed front buckets, climate control, jbl audio with 12 speakers, power sliding rear glass, tilt/telescoping streering wheel, electroluminescent gauges, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass and programmable garage-door opener and front and rear park-assist.  the crewmax tundra grade 29,245) and 4x4 32,295) feature full-size rear side doors and more rear-cab space, with a sliding, fold-flat rear bench seat. Standard equipment on each trim level basically matches that on the double cab models, though the crewmax adds a vertical sliding power rear window.  options include navigation system with back-up camera, rear-seat dvd player, cold-weather features, off-road packages, and 20-inch aluminum wheels. There are few factory-installed stand-alone options, but dozens of dealer-installed accessories, such as bed liners.  trd's rock warrior package 4,560 on double cab) adds color-keyed body trim on the front and a flat-black bumper on the back, fog lamps, black cloth manual seats, bilstein shock absorbers, and 17-inch forged aluminum wheels with bfgoodrich all-terrains for traction, ride and rim protection. The trd offroad package for a double cab is $6,265; on a limited it could be less than $100.  the trd sport package adds color-coordinated trim including bumpers, grille, mirrors and door handles, fog lamps, manual cloth bucket seats, and 20-inch five-spoke machined-face alloy wheels. The first iteration, called t100, was about the size of a dodge dakota, and it taught toyota that in america a larger truck needs a v8 engine. The second generation, and the first with the tundra badge, taught toyota that 7/8 is not full-size. The current generation, launched as a 2007 model, shows that toyota has learned those lessons well.  tundra is big and burly by design. Its large grille, boldly framed in black or chrome, pulls lines from the deeply sculpted hood into the front end. Some like the rounded lines and others call them inflated. In any case, it has presence, and styling is meant to generate discussion. We like it.  in side view, the tundra has understated fender flares tied together by a gentle indent along the lower door panels. Body proportions comfortably accommodate the three bed lengths and wheelbases. Interestingly, gaps between body panels are deliberately wider than contemporary robotic assembly might allow. Toyota's stylists decided that slightly wider gaps better suggest the rugged first impression they wanted the tundra to make.  some of the details on the tundra's body add interest and function. Deep recesses underneath make the beefy door handles easy to grip with gloves on. There are no stand-out styling cues here. The tailgate is damped, making lowering and raising it easier and quieter.  wheels vary by model, but they're all truckish in appearance. The standard 18-inch, drilled steel discs on base tundras are actually quite attractive in their basic, functional look and styled steel wheels are available. The aluminum alloy wheels on the limited models feature thick, monolithic spokes. The optional 20-inch alloys satisfy the current trend towa.

All-new, next-generation models are smooth and quiet. introductiontotally redesigned, the 2012 ford focus looks, feels, and smells like the future. It makes its claim as the technology and fuel-mileage leader in the compact car class, a crowded and competitive field full of good cars with base prices in the $16,000-$17,000 range: volkswagen jetta, chevrolet cruze, honda civic, toyota corolla, subaru impreza, hyundai elantra, mazda3, mitsubishi lancer, kia forte.  but the focus is a mixed bag of function. The new 2. 0-liter engine is super smooth, but the new 6-speed automatic transmission shifts at quirky times. The fabric seats are super, the interior materials excellent and the wraparound cockpit cozy, but there isn't much rear legroom.  focus looks like a big fiesta, with an unmistakably ford shape. It's lower, longer and wider. The new focus hatchback model is especially aerodynamic looking. The windshield is steeply raked and roofline steeply dropped to the liftgate glass, making about as much of a teardrop as a chopped hatchback can be. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard, 6-speed automatic optional, with selectshift manual mode an option to the optional transmission. The engine makes 160 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque, an increase over last year's engine. It's plenty powerful, but mostly, it's extremely smooth. That's what a driver will feel: 'man, this car is smoooth.'  we observed fuel economy in the mid-20s when we were driving the focus. Fuel economy figures from the u. Federal government were not available when this was written.  there's excellent legroom in front, but compared to the previous focus, ford has somehow lost 2. 9 inches of legroom in the rear, despite stretching the length of the car by 3. 5 inches. The importance of rear legroom appears to have been discounted here.  interior noise was definitely not discounted, however. The focus is a compact car with the nvh qualities of a full-size car. A lot of productive effort went into making the cabin silent, with sound insulation. Powertrain noise has also been reduced, by attentive engineering of the new engine, transmission, and chassis.  myford touch powered by sync is the connectivity system that ford is touting with its new cars. The driver uses three senses: see, hear, touch. Ford says the system is designed to be simple and completely intuitive for the driver, and maybe it is designed that way, but that doesn't mean it works that way. We struggled with it. And we think all this technology can distract drivers from the important task of driving.  the gauges that are in front of the driver's eyes are easy to read: big tach and speedo with cool blue needles, fuel and engine temp between them, and easy-to-read digital info above the fuel and temp. The focus ride is good, with a suspension that's on the soft side, which doesn't help precise turning. We also drove a focus se with the 5-speed manual transmission and sport-tuned suspension. Nascar racers did this with cardboard and duct tape for years, but now it's fully electronic; the shutters have 15 different positions, based on engine temperature. The long thin trapezoidish headlamps wrap forward and downward from the cheeks of the car. They're like sweeping dragon's eyes, says ford in their best metaphor yet.  sculpted lines at the sills and door handles flow back from neat modest flared front fenders to give the focus a forward-moving slant: kinetic design energy, ford calls it. The windshield is steeply raked and roofline steeply dropped to the liftgate glass, making about as much of a teardrop as a chopped hatchback can be. The side window outline is shaped like a picture of smoke traveling over a sleek car in a wind tunnel. Big vertical taillamps are nice and safe and volvo-like.  the focus se looks cleaner, we think, lacking chrome beltline trim. The 17-inch titanium wheels are multi-spoke wagon wheels, better looking than the optional 18-inch wheels that are like big chrome stars with thin prongs.  the all-new focus chassis is 30 percent stiffer. It uses a crash structure designed for the larger taurus. More than 55 percent is high-strength steels, including boron b-pillars and front beam, and a decoupling powertrain cradle to keep the engine out of the cabin in a head-on crash. interiorford has been very ambitious the last few years, engineering-wise, and it shows. It shows in the interior of the focus. It's as if they took everything on their to-do list, and stuffed it in the cockpit. It's as busy as they are.  but ambition is good. Because ford went all-out with the new focus interior, there are some great things, starting with the standard seats in sturdy fabric, and the leather-like seats in the sel. Too bad the new chevrolet cruze doesn't have seats like the focus; if its interior matched its great handling and engine, there might be a good gm-ford battle in an important segment. Oh, it's good anyhow.  the word cockpit when used with a car is an awkward fit. But not with the focus. That was the way it was designed, to feel like a cockpit. With all its bells and whistles, geeks will love it, drivin' down the highway feelin' like a pilot, all those switches right nearby, led ambient lighting in a choice of seven colors to suit his or her mood, controls that feel like they wrap around to the elbows on the centerstack, displays to set and adjust with dials and buttons, readouts to read and scroll through, maps to follow, touch-screens to touch, voi. The track for the sliding rear doors is concealed, so the rear doors look like they belong on a sedan or crossover suv. The rear windows are shaped in a tapered trapezoid and inclined inward like a sedan, again contradicting the standard boxy minivan look.  the rear has been designed with a low, wide bumper and a roof spoiler that hides the rear wiper, for a stronger, cleaner appearance. Led tail and stop lamps are used, which illuminate more quickly and consume less power.  overall, the exterior looks clean and sleek, and it is. Aerodynamic work, including underbody covers to help manage airflow, keeps the coefficient of drag relatively low, at 0. 31 cd.  there are quite a few exterior differences from model to model. Wheels may be 17, 18, or 19 inches depending on the model and options. Sienna xle, se, and limited models have front fog lamps in the lower valence, and limited has hid headlamps as an option. The se has dark chrome accents around the lights and smoked headlight covers.  the sienna se gets other special styling cues. The front has a more aggressive appearance. Side skirting visually lowers the vehicle and smoked headlights and taillights make a distinctive statement. Aerodynamic sculpting hugs the standard 19-inch alloy wheels. The se sits lower, on a sport-tuned suspension. interiorthe sienna interior looks modern, with flowing lines and round controls to achieve a unified, integrated design. Prominently visible at the base of the center stack is a shape, something like a tadpole, that tapers laterally toward the passenger, to create the feeling that there is more room to share. Instead, the design suggests shared space and control areas, in a freshly contemporary atmosphere.  design aside, the center stack contains the usual controls, with the message center at the top, the audio system just below, the climate control system below that, and storage and convenience features, such as cupholders and 12-volt plugs, at the lowest level. The shifter is located on the dash, closest to the driver, freeing center console space for storage.  there are three instrument designs. The standard analog system uses bright blue numbering with red needles. In all three designs, a large speedometer and tach are combined with fuel and temperature gauges. The automatic transmission range and odometer are displayed on the lcd in the center of the meter, and an eco-drive light indicates economical driving. The wheel tilts and telescopes.  the front seats are passenger-car comfortable. Gm boasts that the silverado and gmc sierra are the first full-size trucks to offer both 300 horsepower and epa highway ratings of 20 miles per gallon (2wd 5. 3-liter v8 on gasoline).  the large, gold chevy bowtie badge is set against a wide, three-bar chrome grille. The grille is flanked by stacked headlights sporting the latest reflector optics. The front bumper incorporates rectangular fog lights.  the hood has a wide power dome. Bulging front fenders wrap over the front wheels and incorporate the headlights within their forward sweep. Likewise, the rear quarter panels are punctuated by large faired wheel wells.  the rear view of the truck features stacked tail lights on either side of a tall tailgate that has a sculpted center section that mimics and inverts the shape of the fender flares.  built on what general motors calls its gmt900 platform, the silverado shares much of its underpinnings with the tahoe suv, though the pickup gets a unique rear suspension and a frame section 245 percent stiffer than that of the suv. The current silverado chassis is far more rigid than that of the previous-generation, helping reduce the gap between the truck bed and passenger compartment and between fenders and bumpers. The f-150 was completely redesigned for 2009. So for 2010, changes are limited to packaging.  smooth and quiet, the f-150 is comfortable on bumpy streets around town, over rugged terrain such as that found at construction sites, and on the open road. Its steering is nicely waited and requires little correction on the highway making it nice for long cross-country tows. Yet even the least-expensive f-150 isn't boring; it leaves room for customization, does the work required and keeps overhead down.  with one of the deepest beds in the segment, the f-150 has generous cargo volume out back and a maximum payload rating of 3,030 pounds. A properly equipped regular cab f-150 is rated to tow up to 11,300 pounds; other models max out in the 9,000-pound range. (the ford super duty range of heavy-duty pickups is covered in a separate new car test drive review.)  three v8 engines are offered. It is rated at 310 horsepower and 365 pound-feet on gasoline (epa 14/20 mpg) and 320 horsepower and 390 pound-feet on e85 with mileage dropped to 10/14 mpg. The mykey programmable vehicle key is standard on all models except the base xl trim level. Supercab trucks add higher fx4 and lariat trim levels, and a short-bed option (about 5. 5 feet) on all but xl models. The flareside bed can not be combined with xl or lariat supercabs. A long-bed supercab is available only with the heavy-duty 5. 4-liter package. Options are essentially limited to a limited-slip differential, alternative axle ratios, 20-inch wheels, sony sound and navigation systems, moonroof, chrome tube running boards and remote start.  platinum supercrew (from $42,075) gets a unique satin chrome grille and the only one not styled as three sections, body-color bumpers and wheel lip moldings, 20-inch wheels, power-deploy/retract running boards, satin chrome tailgate trim, tuxedo-stitched leather power captain’s chairs, wood grain and brushed aluminum trim, rain-sensing wipers, power folding/heated mirrors, and unique console. It will start with the 310-hp 5. 4-liter v8 and later get a high-performance engine option, a 6. 2-liter v8 of about 400 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. But it is the long-travel high-performance suspension, wheels and tires that set it apart, and the assertive styling.  the f-150 option list is comprehensive and, although it has been simplified in recent years, it can still resemble the tax code to the uninitiated; there are, for example, three codes for a sliding rear window and five for trailer towing mirrors. Wrangler has been modernized with a contemporary engine, electronics inside and underneath, and the body panels are now artfully curved for stiffness while appearing flat.  however, the wrangler remains the most maneuverable and trail capable vehicle from a showroom and will go places most owners don't dare drive. The delta in wheelbase (the distance from front wheel center to rear) is similar to that between a regular cab and crew cab pickup.  heated leather upholstery is available for wrangler. No jeeper ever had it quite like this.  all wranglers are powered by chrysler's 24-valve 3. 6-liter v6, here rated at 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. There's a choice of 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. Indeed, they will travel the interstate with a modicum of comfort and civility but that's not what they're built for. Wranglers are better suited to all-weather urban runabouts, those living on a beach or off the grid or beaten path, or for those whose idea of a freeway is a fast section of dry wash or graded dirt run in 2wd.
